» « If a Chinese wants to be called a Chinese and not a Chinaman, if a Scotsman objects to be called a Scotchman, or if a Negro demands his capital N, it is only the most ordinary politeness to do what is asked of one. »

« Mi subtenus USSR kontraŭ Germanio ĉar mi pensas, ke USSR ne povas tute eskapi sian historion kaj retenas sufiĉe el la originalaj ideoj de la Revolucio por igi ĝin pli esperplena fenomeno ol Nazia Germanio. Mi pensas, kaj pensis ekde la komenco de la milito, en 1936 aŭ ĉirkaŭe, ke nia afero estas la pli bona, sed ni devas daŭre igi ĝin la pli bona, kio bezonas konstantan kritikon» « I would support the USSR against Germany because I think the USSR cannot altogether escape its past and retains enough of the original ideas of the Revolution to make it a more hopeful phenomenon than Nazi Germany. I think, and have thought ever since the war began, in 1936 or thereabouts, that our cause is the better, but we have to keep on making it the better, which involves constant criticism. »

» « Fascism, at any rate the German version, is a form of capitalism that borrows from Socialism just such features as will make it efficient for war purposes... It is a planned system geared to a definite purpose, world-conquest, and not allowing any private interest, either of capitalist or worker, to stand in its way. »

» « When I joined the militia I had promised myself to kill one Fascist — after all, if each of us killed one they would soon be extinct. »

» « I have no particular love for the idealized ‘worker’ as he appears in the bourgeois Communist’s mind, but when I see an actual flesh-and-blood worker in conflict with his natural enemy, the policeman, I do not have to ask myself which side I am on. »
